A Digital museum is a museum which is accessible by a computer as it digitizes its items and exhibits. Digital services are offered by the museums themselves and this is an increasing trend (Szanto, 2010) during the last years while museums are trying to move forward to the new digital age. The term "virtual museums" on the other hand is constantly changing but in general it refers to a museum which exists online, close to what a psysicall museum is and consists of complex types of media and information (Ivarson, 2009). In this blog with the term "digital museum" we refer to both, physical museums that include in their sites virtual tours, and museums that exist exclusively online.

The current debade around the digital and virtual museums is similar to the ongoing debade for the digital libraries . Museums are experiencing the digital age and nowadays it is easier for a lot of people to have access in valiable cultural heritage and rare knowledge from their computers (Incandela, Liffick & Dark 2007). However, many questions are raising on how the real value of an exhibit could be perceived through a computer screen (Reese, 2012).
Nevertheless, digital museums offer a lot of opportunities to anyone who is interested to explore their implementation to the education process (Cromwell, 2010). There is a variety of options and it is quite interesting that several tools are also available for a teacher to create his "own museum" according to his/her classroom needs. It is a project created by Google. Planetariums are not museums if we want to be accurate, however, they are unique places for research and knowledge related to astronomy sciences. Google has created a virtual planetarium and offers an interesting opportunity to observe and "explore" constellation, planets, the moon and other. It could be a tool in an educator's hands to use it and extend it. The Google sky is a similar project.
You can find some information on how the Google sky can be used from an educator here
